What the Franchisees say:

‘Some time ago, when I came across an online Musical Babies notice by chance, I thought this would be great for combining my two passions – music and teaching languages. Today, half a year after buying the franchise, I’m convinced that it’s also a pretty good business idea. Anna is a very creative person full of positive energy. You can always count on her help, and her valuable tips have really helped me not only in session preparations, but also in marketing.’

‘I began my collaboration with Anna nearly 10 years ago. From the very beginning I was captivated by her personality and professionalism. The conditions of collaboration are clear and transparent. From the first day onwards she provides continuous methodological and substantive assistance by training both new and current teachers and patiently addressing any doubts and questions.

She is not only the programme’s author; she is also constantly developing new teaching levels, aids etc., thus staying ahead of the increasingly demanding market for foreign language teaching.

The Musical Babies programme itself definitely stands out from other teaching methods, as each session is prepared with great care, and the richness and variety of the available teaching aids are invaluable. However, the most important aspect is how quickly children learn English by participating in the Musical Babies and Musical English programmes, thus making tremendous progress in a very short time.’

‘Purchasing the Musical Babies and Musical English franchises meant I hit the jackpot. I received ready instructions about how to run the business with the constant support of the Author and high-quality know-how. For 11 years our sessions have been very popular with owners of children’s care facilities and parents. Children are full of joy when learning, and achieved results far surpassed my expectations! Most importantly, there’s definitely an urgent need for sessions like these on the market!’

‘I came across the Musical Babies method completely by chance when I was browsing the internet. I was intrigued from the very first moment, and when I saw that there was no franchisee in Zielona Góra… I got very excited. I remember talking with Anna for a few days… although I was flooding her with questions and doubts, she patiently explained everything and gave me various instructions, from the method, sessions and materials to organisational matters related to running the business. Finally, I decided to collaborate with her. My first year of running sessions was the most surprising. I started with huge worries and dilemmas just like those experienced by the mums of small children, especially those up to 3 years of age. I completed the training sessions, familiarised myself with the method, had the materials and the right tools, and most of all, had Anna’s assurance that the method works wonders; however, at the beginning, it was all just theory to me. I wondered, “how can a one- or even one-and-a-half year old, who doesn’t speak yet, learn a foreign language having only weekly sessions?”. Despite my own experiences and knowledge, I still had doubts. However, after three months I saw the first effects, and everything started becoming easier. I could see toddlers’ positive reactions to melodic songs and their joyful imitations of me and their mothers in gestures and movements. I noticed how much they loved playing with the teaching aids that I handed out to go with particular songs. With time, they began understanding my instructions and pointing to specific objects whose names they’d heard in English. They couldn’t speak Polish or English yet, but could understand me very well and follow the sessions in the company of other children and other mums, simultaneously feeling safe with their own. Today, after 6 years of collaboration with Anna, I’m in a completely different place. This work is also my passion and I can’t imagine myself on a different career path. I collaborate with nurseries, preschools, mums’ clubs, a library, foundations, and birthing schools. Every day I meet mothers and their children, and I see their interactions and the bond that exists between them and between them and me – over time, this bond turns into friendship. Mums can come to sessions for a break from everyday life. It’s a time during which they can exchange experiences, parental concerns, ideas for upbringing, and news related to gadgets that facilitate day-to-day life. Personally, I am a mother, which is why running these sessions is my pleasure.’

‘I’ve been running Musical Babies sessions in Kraków since 2007, when the teaching method was still in its infancy. Now it offers a rich teaching programme, an enormous amount of teaching aids, support for teachers and franchisees, and is constantly developing. Musical English works excellently in both preschool sessions and open courses. Thanks to the programme, our language school Mova can offer sessions for pupils of all ages: from the youngest to young adults.’

FOR WHOM

Contact us if you’re:

Almost anyone can become a Musical Babies franchisee! It can be a qualified teacher who will be running Musical Babies, Musical English and/or Niños Musicales sessions directly, but it can also be a non-teacher who will employ teachers and only coordinate the sessions. Among the current franchisees are owners of language schools, preschools, private nurseries, music schools, dance schools and other places organising free time for children, and also people not yet affiliated with such activities. Next to a Musical Babies franchise centre, you are free to conduct other business activities.

To use the franchise offer, you do not need to have your own premises! Some franchisees do not have their own premises and generally organise sessions in rooms rented by the hour in culture centres, playrooms, baby clubs, cafés for people with children, etc. Apart from open sessions, i.e. those that can be attended by parents or guardians, there are also sessions run in nurseries, private preschools and other places of education.

Rules of collaboration

Become convinced that the Musical Babies franchise is an excellent business idea! Regardless of whether you’re already running your own business, or are still thinking about the type of business to open, the licence for teaching children English or Spanish is the right path for your development! For many franchisees, Musical Babies is their only source of income, but it can also be an expansion of your current business and a way to gain extra income.

Why should you choose the Musical Babies, Musical English and/or Niños Musicales franchise?

Exclusive licence

You can have a Musical Babies, Musical English and/or Niños Musicales licence with territorial exclusivity in a given city, its part, a particular region, or one teaching centre. In small towns (up to 120,000 residents), exclusivity is automatic. In larger cities, exclusivity is an option that you can buy after 3 years of collaboration if, during that time, your teaching centre shows an increase in the number of children participating in sessions.

ABOUT THE TEACHING PROGRAMMES

Musical Babies is much more than English language learning for children – it’s also sessions run in English and based on music and rhythm for children from the age of 6 months to 3 years. The programme continues for 3 to 6 year olds as Musical English sessions. A great addition for the same age group can be Spanish learning as part of the Niños Musicales programme.

Musical Babies, Musical English and Niños Musicales sessions combine rhythm and music with foreign language learning. Thanks to them, children develop a sense of rhythm, the ability to listen and to interact with their peers, they improve motor coordination, acquire the correct pronunciation pattern, and are familiarised with the sound of the foreign language, which helps them in later learning. During the sessions, children listen to songs and nursery rhymes in the foreign language, and are encouraged to participate in motor activities. The whole is complemented by teaching aids. In this way, children develop linguistic and musical intelligence, which affects not only the subsequent learning of foreign languages, but also the ability to learn to read or understand mathematics. Dancing and jumping to the rhythmic Irish and Scottish music develop the child’s motor intelligence, and through contact with peers, the child is taught to share, to be patient and the generally accepted rules of social behaviour.

By participating in English or Spanish sessions at such an early age, the child learns the correct pronunciation, which gives them a chance to avoid a future problem that even professional teachers have to deal with in their adult life. The child gains a natural approach to language learning, a high level of pronunciation and intonation, as well as a rich vocabulary and great ease of learning new material.

The Musical Babies, Musical English and Niños Musicales programmes are also run in nurseries and public and private preschools.

The Musical English programme has a Positive Assessment of Compliance with the New Core Curriculum issued by the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education and Science (formerly: Ministry of National Education, MEN).

We also have the European Language Label Certificate for Innovation in Teaching a Foreign Language, awarded in 2007.

about_program
about_program

What makes Anna Rattenbury’s teaching programmes unique?

  1. 1. Sessions are attended by children from the age of 6 months – starting learning at such an early stage in a child’s life is an opportunity to learn a foreign language and the mother tongue at the same time.
  2. 2. We teach through music, rhythm and play.
  3. 3. The sessions are focused on education, but they also have a general-developmental nature. Children participating in them develop faster.
  4. 4. Classes can be organized in open groups, i.e. with a parent or guardian, or without the participation of parents or guardians, for example, in public and private nurseries, preschools, baby clubs, etc.
  5. 5. During the sessions, children can use Waldorf and EduSensory toys. These are simple toys made by hand from natural materials such as wood, silk, cotton, felt or wool. They are sensory toys, which means that their task is to stimulate children’s senses through smell, texture, aesthetic appearance, and to stimulate the imagination.
  6. 6. Musical Babies sessions ensure children’s contact with living language that cannot be replaced by any online English course for children or an application for learning English for children.
  7. 7. The sessions use a rich and varied range of original teaching materials in the form of Musical English educational boards, picture cards (Flash Cards), dominoes, puzzles, Musical English Educational Mats and so-called Story Boards (boards with stories) as well as other materials for children: CDs with recordings, Musical English Activity pages, etc.

FAQs

about the Musical Babies, Musical English and Niños Musicales teaching methods:

+

How are our sessions different from other language courses for children?

The basic feature of Musical Babies, Musical English and Niños Musicales sessions is a completely different approach to teaching. First of all, we do not use the term ‘lesson’ but rather ‘activities’ where the focus is on the children, not the teacher. The programme teaches the language in a stress-free and effective way. We do not teach children to compete; we focus on gradual learning without a race such as ‘who will memorise the most words?’. It is not the number of words that is important, but the degree of their acquisition, durability in the child’s memory and, above all, the ability to use them in the right context. Vocabulary and phrases must be connected with the child’s world. We learn from the mistakes of other teaching programmes, and these are often visible to the naked eye – the most common ones are: too extensive material that needs to be done regardless of whether the child is ready for the next step, and vocabulary that is unsuitable for the child’s age, embedded in an unfamiliar context, almost abstract.
+

Why do we teach children as young as 6 months old?

Children at this age are only starting to learn their mother tongue. If they have the opportunity to learn their mother tongue and a foreign language at the same time, the child learns them simultaneously. The brain of a child who learns many languages at the same time creates separate linguistic ‘boxes’ with all the words, grammar rules, etc. Thanks to this, later in life, the child thinks in a foreign language and does not have to waste time translating something from one language into another – the child immediately uses the foreign language accurately, without having to deal with words that are untranslatable. Moreover, the child acquires linguistic vigilance and correct pronunciation. At school age, children in the Musical Babies and Musical English programmes have a perfect accent, ease of learning foreign languages, and in English they show a level typical of children who grew up in England.
+

Why is music so important in foreign language learning?

The most important teaching medium during Musical Babies, Musical English and Niños Musicales sessions is music, because language learned through nursery rhymes and songs is indelible. The human brain loves tonality, rhythm and harmony. For this reason, the combination of music and learning a foreign language, which is, after all, music for the ear, allows to achieve lasting results. The language is taught in a way that is pleasant for the child, and is remembered forever. Babies who attend Musical Babies sessions become familiar with the English language, learn its sound, key and sentence stress through simple rhymes and songs. Each song is combined with fun activities that the children do or participate in, e.g. in many songs they are tossed up when they hear the word ‘up’, which makes them remember vocabulary and phrases even though they do not speak at all yet. They play with music in general through various aspects of eurythmics. This is extremely important in learning the language itself as it opens the brain to rhythm, sounds and tonality. Also, babies have the opportunity to interact with other children of a similar age. The older children are, the more and more often they engage in active rhyming and singing songs – initially they do so in single words, and then whole phrases. At the age of about 4-5, they can already sing entire songs; they also start to play with the language, change some words and phrases, and then create their own rhymes and sentences.
+

Why was Musical English created as an addition to the Musical Babies offer?

The entire learning process is spread over many years, because this is how each of us learns our native language. We don’t speak in full sentences right away. When teaching children from 6 months to 6 years of age, we have enough time to gradually develop the language skills of each child – so that the classes have a long-lasting effect. In addition, long-term education is associated with a great advantage for the franchisee who secures a client for several years.
+

Why is learning correct pronunciation so important?

The speech organs of a child aged 2-6 are very flexible, thanks to which a child easily learns even the most difficult sounds of English pronunciation, e.g. sounds that appear in the words: think, path, this, then. This skill fades with age and errors in pronunciation and intonation are hard to avoid.
+

Why is play so important in children’s education?

Young children do not have the motivation to learn languages. Learning itself is completely abstract to them. They don’t need English at work, on holiday, or to ‘get along’. Our sessions are creative fun and a way to learn and develop knowledge of a foreign language later in life. For example, children can learn the names of colours by mixing dyes in glass containers. Children taught in the Musical Babies programme do not learn for any specific purpose and are not aware that they are learning – they just have fun and this is the only way children can learn effectively! Learning is practically a side effect of play.
+

Which teaching aids are used by teachers in the Musical Babies, Musical English and Niños Musicales programmes?

During the sessions, in addition to music, we use a very rich base of teaching aids that are not textbooks. In working with children, we also use sensory aids and methods that engage all the senses: not only sight and hearing, but also touch, taste and smell. In 2016, a special line of toys and aids was created under the name EduSensory (more information at www.edusensory.pl), which greatly enrich the range of aids used during our sessions. In Musical Babies, Musical English and Niños Musicales sessions, children do not work with textbooks because the sessions are focused all the time on learning through ‘a total immersion in the language’ using all the above-mentioned senses. Children learn and practice the language in a sensory way with an emphasis on the musical and motor aspect. For this purpose, the teachers have at their disposal an extremely extensive database of teaching materials, such as picture cards, boards for songs, instruments, puppets, large-format educational mats, sensory toys and many others. The picture materials were created by a group of experienced graphic designers and illustrators of books for children, as well as by children aged 6-16 themselves. Older children, over 3 years of age, can also work in their activity books in addition to participating in sessions, but the goal is a living language that children learn and use in a natural way, hence working with a textbook is absolutely unnecessary. Due to the structure and nature of the classes and the variety of teaching aids, there is no way that children will get bored during the sessions.
+

Why do the children not use textbooks during the sessions?

Working with a textbook in teaching young children is really a waste of time, and during our sessions it is absolutely unacceptable. Each minute of sessions stimulates the child and allows them to have great fun with English or Spanish. The idea is for the child to remember words and phrases in a permanent way. It is not the number of words that counts, but the fact that the child knows when and how to use them. It should be added here that in addition to learning the language, children also have the opportunity to perform various scientific experiments, for example: while learning about colours, they dip their hands in colourful, jelly-like substances or mix colours in shaving foam. A language learned in this way is remembered forever and this is the meaning of our sessions, and the explanation why we don’t work with textbooks.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Anna Rattenbury

- a philologist and methodologist by education with many years of experience in teaching English to both adults and children.

Privately, a mother of two wonderful daughters, Julia (born 2000) and Natasha (born 2003), who not only ‘tested’ all the methods on themselves, but are also the authors of many teaching aids, drawings, boards and picture cards.

The inspiration for creating the English language through music programme came from working in China in the 1990s as a teacher at a teacher training college. As part of my work with students, I was asked to conduct English ‘lessons’ in a primary school for a group of 40 (!) children aged 2.5 to 5 years. Working with such a large group without access to any materials (there was not a single copy & print shop in the city) was the best creativity training for me. Having paper, crayons, scissors and my own voice at my disposal, I managed to achieve great results that I hope pay off to this day.

It was then that I found out that it is the songs and funny rhymes that children remember the most. Years later, I created the Musical Babies programme, which I first tested on my own children.
